Hulk is an adaptation of the famous Marvel comic that spawned the popular 60's show. I never was much of a Hulk fan, but I wanted to like this movie. The plot only exists in the middle of the film and was not to bad, but the first fifteen minutes and last half-hour lack any coherency. The first fifteen minutes seems like it was taken from an art film and the last half-hour includes a major "why the hell did they do that" moment that is never explained. What works is the connection between Bruce and his father and their relationship, but unfortunately that's about it. Lee uses some interesting effects and cuts to create comic book panels, but they are not pulled off very well, they leave the screen convoluted and makes it near impossible to follow some scenes. It does work occasionally in a few of the actions segments towards the end, but they drag down the first half of the movie. The CGI in the movie is not bad, but it leaves much to be desired. The Hulk although nicely modeled does not interact with the environment most of the time. The texture work on the models gives all the CGI a cartoony look that does not sit well with the background plates and actors. And the final battle results in something that is unrecognizable, that I will label the amorphous blob. The slow pacing keeps this movie from being the summer blockbuster it was meant to be, and the movie's deepness is not quite deep enough to satisfy others. Only Hulk fans need apply, no one else will understand or care about this movie.
