Tron 2.0
PC

Monolith / Buena Vista Interactive

Tron was a ground breaking if somewhat corny movie in the 80's. Now 20 years later Disney has decided to give a sequel to Tron in video game form. Tron 2.0 is a unique FPS that blends light RPG elements without disrupting the action. You play as Alan's (from the movie) son, Jet. The story starts with Alan disappearing and the computer AI, Ma3a digitizing you. The story takes several twists and turns, but nothing truly original. Completing certain ingame goals award you build points like experience points in an average RPG. Each build level you upgrade one of several stats. Also, you have subroutines that grant you special abilities and they can be updated for even more customization. The subroutines have to be allocated according to the memory of the computer you are on, which causes so strategy and prevents you from becoming overly powerful. And you have to worry about your subroutines becoming corrupted or infected with viruses, severely degrading their efficiency. The game's weapons range from your standard FPS weapons, such as a sniper, to unique Tron weapons like the disc. There are actually only four primates (or weapons), disc, rod, ball, and mesh; but subroutines modify the weapons giving you nine different weapons. The unique weapons give the game a very unique play style and feel, especially the disc. Throughout the game you will visit many unique locations ranging from an old server, to the internet, and even a PDA. Each with its own unique architecture and available memory. The game's art, just like the movie, is wonderful. It is some of the best graphics I have seen squeezed out of the Lithtech engine. Now for what you all were waiting for, the lightcycles. The lightcycles are fast. furious, and of course, fun. Powerups, speed zones, and the new super lightcycle change the game up a bit from the old arcade games making it more challenging. The AI can be challenging because of its quick reflexes. Not only do lightcycle races occur in the single player campaign, but there is a separate tournament style ladder. In multiplayer the lightcycles can only be played over a LAN, due to latency issues, but deadly discs can be played over the internet. Tron 2.0 is a extremely enjoyable game that I recommend to all action gamers. Even if you hated the movie, you will find the game enjoyable. Hopefully we won't have to wait another 20 years for Tron 3.0.
